Overview of

MCA Poster

This project for DES 309, Typography, involved designing the 2024 MCA Events schedule with a strong emphasis on clarity, readability, and visual appeal. The task required the use of a single typeface in three weights to create a clear hierarchy, while incorporating linear elements, texture, and color to enhance visual interest. The design aimed to effectively present complex event information in an organized and aesthetically pleasing manner.

Problem

The 2024 MCA Events schedule needed to be presented in a way that is both visually appealing and easy to understand. The challenge was to organize a complex set of event information into a clear and cohesive layout using only one typeface with three weights, while also incorporating linear elements, texture, and color to maintain aesthetic interest and guide the viewer through the content seamlessly.

Goal

The objective was to design the 2024 MCA Events schedule in a way that ensures clarity and easy navigation while maintaining a visually compelling aesthetic. To achieve this, I utilized a single typeface across three weights, strategically leveraging typographic hierarchy for readability and emphasis. The design incorporated linear elements to guide the viewer's eye and introduced subtle textures and a refined color palette to add depth and visual interest. This approach balanced functional clarity with a modern, sophisticated look, effectively communicating the event information while enhancing the overall visual experience.

Designing

Exploration & Iteration

I initially explored various layout compositions, focusing on organizing the event information to ensure both legibility and visual interest. During this process, I experimented with different forms of linear shapes, using them to guide the viewer’s eye and add structure to the design. This allowed me to strike a balance between clarity and a dynamic visual presentation.

Adding Design Elements

After finalizing the layout and selecting Neue Haas Grotesk as my typeface, I incorporated design elements by experimenting with various textures, colors, and duotones in InDesign and Illustrator. With the constraint of using only one primary color, I chose a pink and black-and-white aesthetic. This decision enabled me to craft a visually striking, cohesive design that balanced simplicity with impactful visual appeal.

Final Choice

For the color choices, I drew inspiration from the natural hues of marble, crafting gradients with overlapping colors and a subtle blur effect. This technique added depth and visual intrigue, reflecting the layered complexity of the game's theme. The result was a series of vibrant marble-inspired visuals, which were seamlessly integrated into the card designs to enhance both aesthetic appeal and thematic cohesion.
